Syrian president’s email ‘hacked’

Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s personal email account has reportedly been hacked into, according to news channel Al-Arabiya, with the individual responsible threatening to disclose classified information on the country’s embattled regime.

The hacker, identified in the report as Saudi national Salman Al Anzi, also claims to have hacked into systems belonging to several other Syrian government departments, including the Ministry of Information.

Al-Arabiya reports that Al Anzi has obtained fresh details on Al-Assad’s relationship with Iran from the Syrian dictator’s personal emails, and will make this information public if unspecified demands are not met.

Popular uprisings broke out in Syria in March 2011 and are continuing throughout the country to this day. Fighting between government security forces and protesters has claimed an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 lives.

Demonstrators are demanding the removal of Al-Assad, who has been in power since 2000.
