Dubai Culture to host fine arts workshops to nurture local talent in traditional artforms

Dubai, UAE: The Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate’s dedicated Authority for culture, arts, and heritage, will host a series of fine arts workshops, covering traditional artforms including calligraphy, drawing and Islamic decoration, from July 9 to 30, 2011.
While the Islamic decoration workshop is open for ages 10 to 15 years, offering them a welcome change during the summer break, all other workshops are for those aged 16 and above. The art works created at the various sessions will be displayed at an exhibition to be held in Dubai during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Khalil Abdulwahid, Visual Arts Manager, Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, said: “To foster a genuine understanding of arts, it is important for artists to grasp the basics of any art-form. The workshops by the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, led by experts, have been designed to nurture local talent and strengthen their skills in traditional artforms such as calligraphy and Islamic decorations, which also underline our heritage and culture.”
Aimed at honing the basic skills in drawing in coal, pastel, and acrylic colours, as well as a theoretical understanding of drawing, the drawing workshop will be held from July 9 to 30, every Saturday, Monday and Thursday from 5pm to 8pm at the Dar Al Nadwa in Al Bastakiya. The participants can also attend a one-day seminar on the history of art and art schools, which will be followed by studying the work of master artists.
The calligraphy workshops aim to provide participants with an overview on the origins, development, and techniques involved in Script and Ruqa calligraphy. The workshop on Script Calligraphy will run from July 17 to 21 and on Ruqa Calligraphy from July 24 to 28, from 5pm to 7pm at Al Twar Public Library.
The Islamic decoration workshop is envisaged to educate children on art used in Islamic architecture, Islamic decorations, and achieving harmony in colours within the motifs. The workshop will run from July 24 to 28, from 5pm to 7pm at Al Twar Public Library.
