Weight watching campaigns in Saudi Cartoons

Weight Watching by Saudi Cartoonist Rabeea

by Iqbal Tamimi

It seems that women all over the world suffer the pressures of the media to control their weight. There are hardly any advertisements or campaigns through the media that targets men or make them feel guilty when it comes to weight watching.

{jcomments on} This media bias appears more clearly in cartoons, caricatures and animation published in the Arab region. Advertising campaigns use slim women as a vehicle of entertainment and promotional campaigns of success. There are hardly any photos of successful overweight women.

This caricature is by Saudi cartoonist Rabeea, published on Alriyadh newspaper. Please notice that Arabic can be read from right to left, this applies to this self-explanatory cartoon that reflect women as stupid as well.
